Import Requirements
1 Admissible Plant Parts: Above-ground parts
2 Admissible Ports: All Ports
3 Import Permit Required: An Import Permit is required. To obtain a permit, go to APHIS eFile.
4 Subject to Inspection: This commodity is subject to inspection at the port of entry and all general requirements of 7 CFR 319.56-3.
5 Commercial Consignments Only
6 Phytosanitary Certificate: Requires a phytosanitary certificate issued by the National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) of Israel with an additional declaration stating the consignment was grown and shipped in accordance with 7 CFR 319.56-4.
7 Packaging or Labeling Requirements: The consignment must be packed in an insect-proof packinghouse, individually packed in transparent plastic bags, packed in cartons, placed on pallets, and then covered with shrink wrapping.

Additional Requirements

Lettuce may be imported into the United States from Israel without fumigation for leafminers, thrips, and Sminthurus viridis only in accordance with this section and all other applicable provisions of this subpart.

Growing conditions

The lettuce must be grown in insect-proof houses covered with 50 mesh screens, double self-closing doors, and hard walks (no soil) between the beds

The lettuce must be grown in growing media that has been sterilized by steam or chemical means

The lettuce must be inspected during its active growth phase and the inspection must be monitored by a representative of the National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) of Israel

The crop must be protected with sticky traps and prophylactic sprays approved for the crop by Israel

The lettuce must be moved to an insect-proof packinghouse at night in plastic containers covered by 50 mesh screens

The lettuce must be transported to the airport in a closed refrigerated truck for shipment to the United States
